Local fishers of Oslob

Traditional non-motorised banca

Field work blog – Post 6

A local fisher heads out at dawn with his traditional banca with simple fishing gear – a gill net and hook and line. Oslob, the Philippines. Catch on a good day? About US$2. Not every day. Only about 8 months of the year because of typhoons and rough seas. His family won’t eat every day. Livelihoods for fishers are crucial to the success of conservation and dive tourism.
